Biography
Mykal Tayquon Fox, known by his ring name “The Professor,” is an American professional boxer competing in the welterweight division. Born on October 28, 1995, in Washington, D.C., Fox stands at an impressive 6 feet 3 inches. Fox was raised in Forestville, Maryland, in a family immersed in boxing. His father, Troy Fox, served as his trainer and his older brother, Alantez Fox, is also a professional boxer. Growing up in this environment, Mykal began boxing at age four and developed his skills through countless hours in the gym alongside his family.
As an amateur, Fox compiled a record of 40 wins and 60 losses. Though he did not claim major national titles, he gained experience in Golden Gloves tournaments and local circuits. He participated in notable events like the 2008 Mayor’s Cup Boxing Tournament in Washington, D.C.
April 18, 2014, and quickly built momentum with a series of wins. In August 2018, he earned a unanimous decision victory over former world champion DeMarcus Corley, displaying poise and range control. In February 2019, he suffered his first professional defeat in a unanimous decision loss to hard-hitting prospect Shohjahon Ergashev. He bounced back strongly in May 2019, defeating 2016 Olympic gold medalist Fazliddin Gaibnazarov in a major upset by outboxing him across ten rounds. Later that year, Fox delivered a performance against Eudy Bernardo, winning every round on all three judges’ scorecards. In August 2021, Fox faced Gabriel Maestre in a fight that drew criticism due to a controversial decision; Fox outlanded Maestre and scored a knockdown, but the judges awarded the bout to Maestre. In October 2022, he took on former title challenger Egidijus Kavaliauskas and was dropped twice in the third round, ultimately losing by decision.
Outside the ring, Fox is known for his calm demeanor and intellectual approach to boxing. He enjoys video games, reading, and hopes to travel to Europe and Asia. He has occasionally worked in boxing media, offering sharp insights into the sport.
Technical Overview
A large part of Fox’s style is molded by his father and coach, Troy Fox. Under his father’s guidance, Mykal developed a textbook approach tailored to his physical gifts. Coming out of the Maryland/Washington D.C. boxing scene, Fox represents a local style known for slickness and control. The DMV has a rich amateur tradition, producing fighters like the Russell family and the Peterson brothers, all of whom share a common thread of movement, discipline, and clean punching. Fighters from this region learn to use the jab like a scalpel, not a hammer, and to win with intelligence rather than brawling.
Fox throws his jab with surgical precision, often doubling or tripling it. From that jab, he builds combinations like a strategist—double jab to a straight left to the body, or a lead right hook followed by a straight left and a jab reset. His signature check right hook followed by a pivot shows how comfortable he is playing matador against aggression. These combinations aren’t meant to knock you out but to break space and control the pace. His jab is like an older, taller brother placing a palm on your forehead to keep you at bay, killing your ego. If you try to bite, he slaps you back—just like Fox’s sharp, reactive counters that sting when you overcommit.
Fox’s overall fight plan is cerebral, rooted in distance management and sharp timing. He’s rarely caught flat-footed or overreaching. That father-son relationship in the gym shaped not only his fundamentals but also his emotional control. His discipline in sticking to a smart, consistent game plan—round after round—is what separates him from most of the division.
