Deontay Wilder has provided a significant update on the possibility of facing Oleksandr Usyk, confirming that negotiations between the two camps are actively underway. The former WBC heavyweight champion admitted he was surprised by Usyk’s recent callout, but stressed that discussions have gone beyond speculation and into serious talks.

Speaking to Seconds Out, Wilder made it clear that while the fight is not finalized, momentum is building. “That fight I wouldn’t say it’s close, but it is in negotiations,” Wilder said. “My heart is still pumping with joy. I think it’s definitely going to happen.” He emphasized that the key difference this time is substance: “It’s not just talk. It’s real conversations we’re having amongst both of these teams.”

Usyk, the reigning WBC, WBA and IBF heavyweight champion, has openly targeted Wilder despite questions surrounding the American’s recent form. Wilder ruled the heavyweight division from 2015 to 2020, making 10 defenses of the WBC title, but has suffered four defeats in recent years, leading many to believe his peak had passed.

Still, the opportunity represents a potential return to the sport’s biggest stage for Wilder, who last fought in June, stopping Tyrrell Herndon in the seventh round. Acknowledging boxing’s unpredictability, Wilder remained cautiously optimistic. “I know how boxing is… but this right here I think it’s going to be solid,” he said, adding that if it does materialize, “it will be a hell of a fight to watch.”
